Phi, a letter of the Greek alphabet and symbol of The Golden Ratio, has been hi-jacked by Lee Long, a singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, artist and mathematician from East London. After noticing the significance of The Golden Ratio in both the micro and macrocosm, his research began to point him onto a path that had been trodden by many a musician and artist throughout history, including Mozart and Leonardo da Vinci.
After studying Mathematics at The University of London, Lee Joined a band that fused electronic dance music with guitars, in which he began to hone in on his craft. Whilst working with some very talented people, he began to use a mac and the internet to learn to produce, design, edit and write, constantly striving to surpass everything that had gone before, putting him in the position that he is in today.
After wondering and experimenting with how he could try to implement The Golden Ratio into his art and music, like so many had before, he finally found something that was practical and which he arrived at by learning to DJ. The amazing time-stretching algorithm of Native Instrument’s Traktor enabled him to mix the two types of dance music that he was into at the time, by a tempo compromise in which Dubstep was sped up and Drum and Bass was slowed down to 160bpm. It was this that led him to discover what he has coined ‘The Golden Tempo’, by multiplying Phi by 100 you get 161.80339..., a constant that he has kept constant throughout his tracks to this day.
So, at 161.8034bpm Lee has been producing a myriad of futuristic sounding rock, punk and metal tracks, drawing sonic influences from contemporary electronic dance music. Whilst fusing the weight, punch and metronomic rhythm section of the club with catchy vocals and raucous guitars, he is determined to bring the guitar solo back from the dead with a vengeance. And, unlike most of the artists of today, this one really does have something to say.
He has recently hooked up with Paul Kodish (Pendulum, DJ Fresh, Apollo 440) who is acting as mentor and chief of quality control. With expertise and experience of this caliber in the camp this team is a force to be reckoned with.
With a lightweight one-man setup, Lee will be turning up at venues across Europe in the coming months delivering a monster live sound with a laptop, Les Paul and mic. So, keep your eyes peeled and your ears close to the floor, as a roof will soon be torn off somewhere close to your door, by the forward-thinking powerhouse that is Phi.
